Spotify is the largest music streaming service worldwide, capturing 32% of all music streaming subscribers as of 2021. The platform launched in 2006, was just officially launched in Feb 2021 in Nepal. Available on iOS, Android and desktop, the app follows a freemium model, meaning that you have to pay for certain features like downloading songs. Although, the free version is available in Nepal, to get the premium version one has to have access to PayPal, Mastercard or a Visa/ American Express credit card. The number of streams compiled in this list is updated till the 19th of April, 2022.

A cult hit, the lyrics of Maya explains love as if the artist themself thought of what love actually means. Lines like, love is smiling when you’re alone and love is garnering our lives with memories, expound on the melodic nature of the song. The song is produced by Foeseal and was released in April 2021. Although KC doesn’t have a huge discography releasing only one other song ‘Kurirahe Ma’, Maya itself is widely popular.

9. Hataarindai, Bataashindai

Written, performed, and produced by Vaidya, ‘Hataarindai, Bataashindai’ was released in 2019. Initially renowned for the music video, the lyrics of the song are equally loved by the fans. The video and lyrics both convey two lovers missing each other but in the climax it is revealed that the protagonist is homosexual. The clip is directed by Nurbu Lama and was quite bold for the time as homosexuality is still not openly talked about in Nepal.

‘Smile’ or ‘Mooskan’ in Nepali, is a song written by Vaidya in 2010 but was released in 2018. The song is written, composed, and produced by Vaidya, however, the melodic flute that is essential to the song is played by Sumit Maharjan. The lyrics are composed in a way that describes, what the protagonist loves about their significant other. A slow song giving an offbeat indie vibe, Mooskan garners over 2.1 million/ 21 lakhs streams on Spotify.

The oldest song on the list, ‘Syndicate’ meaning ‘crossroad’ is an indie-pop hit by Bipul Chettri. His songs are well-known to have an old-school composition, similar to that of Nepali folk music but with modern and catchy lyrics. The single released in 2015 depicts a story about a guy in a public vehicle when a lady catches his eye. The song then moves on to express his sorrow and wonder as both of them would separate at the ‘Syndicate’, him off to Sikkim and her towards Siliguri. The single comes after Chettri’s famous album, ‘Sketches of Darjeeling’ which is on the way to Sikkim.

Although Gauchan does not have extensive discography, Maya and its many namesakes have become a household name.
