Top Provinces with highest number of Goats supplied to the Valley during Dashain

Every year, the country produces 10.40 million goats. Domestic production has grown substantially over the previous five years, while imports have progressively declined. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, Nepal's annual meat, egg, fish, and milk output is worth Rs. 450 billion at current market rates. Per year, the country produces Rs. 275 billion in meat, Rs. 122 billion in milk, Rs. 37 billion in fish, and Rs. 17 billion in eggs. Here are the top seven provinces from which goats are transported to Kathmandu during Dashain.

Gandaki province is 21,504 square km in the total area which is about 14.57% of the country's total area. Province 4 supplies the least number of goats to the Kathmandu Valley. This year, just around 2,500 goats are supplied out of a total of 60,000 in Dashain. Gandaki province's agricultural sector employs 72 percent of its households. Per capita foodgrain output is 234 kg, milk production is 64 liters, and meat production is 11 kg. The province has pledged self-sufficiency in food, milk, and meat in the coming 5 years. The major district from which goats are brought to Kathmandu is Baglung, Kaski, and Myagdi.

Nepal's Province 2 consists of eight main terai districts. This province, formerly known as the grain basket, lags behind in terms of nutrition security and HDI. Surprisingly, this province is also a food insecure province, as stated by the Province Secretary for Land Management, Agriculture, and Cooperatives. The establishment of Agriculture Knowledge Centers and Livestock Experts Centers as provincial ministry wings has definitely encouraged the provincial ministry; nevertheless, cooperation between the local and central governments is critical for meeting the goals. Only 6000 goats have been brought to the Kathmandu valley out of a total of around 60,000 for the upcoming Dashain.

Province 6, also known as Karnali Province has a total area of 27,984 square km which is about 18.97 percent of the total land area of the nation making it the largest province of Nepal. This region has a high level of food insecurity, attributable mostly to rice consumption. The enormous potential regions remain unexplored, with Nepal Food Corporation and the World Food Programme dependent on cereal grain supplied from the Terai region. Because of the constraints of road transportation, this region is by definition an organic zone. According to "The Livestock Traders Service Association," Province 6 provided around 7000 goats to the Kathmandu Valley in the upcoming Dashain.

Province 5, also known as Lumbini Province named after Gautam Buddha's birthplace, the holy pilgrimage site. The province has a total of 22,288 square km area which is about 15.1 percent of the total area of the nation. With a unanimous decision, Deukhuri was declared as the capital for the province. There is a large amount of ethnic diversity within the province consisting of ethnic groups such as Tharu, Magar, Newar, etc. According to ‘The Livestock Traders Service Association’ the total number of goats supplied by Province 5 to the Kathmandu valley is around 7,500.

Province 7, also known as Sudurpaschim province is the westernmost province of the seven provinces having a total area of 19,515.52 square km which is about 13.22 percent of the country’s total area. As per the assembly voting, Godawari is declared as the capital of the province. As the festive season is approaching the number of goat breeders is also increasing to meet the demands of the Kathmandu valley. According to ‘The Livestock Traders Service Association’ the total number of goats supplied by Province 1 to the Kathmandu valley is around 9,000.

The province also has a high demand for goat meat during the festive seasons, according to ‘The Livestock Traders Service Association’ the total number of goats supplied by Province 1 to the Kathmandu valley is around 11,000.
